The Basics & the Details: BillyGrey Teaches You How to Master Both

Whether you’re a college student entering the professional world for the first time, or a man who’s decided he needs a wardrobe overhaul, BillyGrey can help you with the wardrobe staples every man needs and the details that bring a little more personality into your look.

Building a Professional Wardrobe Doesn’t Happen by Accident

We’d like to begin by making two important points about developing a wardrobe: First, a wardrobe should be planned. Considering what you need ahead of time will save you time and money as you begin to add pieces to your closet. Second, a wardrobe should evolve. As you develop your own sense of style, and as trends come and go, you’ll naturally add newer pieces and cull older ones.

Remember, fashion is rather arbitrary; last year’s trend can become this year’s fashion disaster. Style, on the other hand, is a timeless representation of who you are. Some fashion trends simply won’t look right on you. You should be aware of this and dress for your particular look and personality – not to fit in with what the fellows in Hollywood are wearing.

One more thing: remember that this is an investment. A well-tailored suit of good quality can last for years, and can evolve with you as you get to know your own personal style and choose accessories that suit you. So spend the extra money to have a color consultation. Get a real fitting, have your suit tailored, get your shoes shined.

There are certain things in a man’s life that he shouldn’t skimp on. A wardrobe is one of them.

Wardrobe Staples Every Man Needs in His Closet

The key to building a good wardrobe is choosing pieces that look good in a variety of situations. Here are a few must-haves:

A Navy Suit and a Charcoal Gray Suit

One for class, one for swagger. These versatile pieces are perfect for day-to-day business or special occasions. You can wear them every day with different shirt and tie combinations and look like the best-dressed guy in the room.

A Navy Blazer

While you don’t need a suit for every occasion, there are times when a polo shirt just won’t cut it. Get out of the polo/khaki rut with a nice blazer, tailored to fit, paired with a collared shirt. Wear it with jeans to network at the annual company picnic or show your younger friends how to dress on a night out.

Trousers for Every Occasion

We recommend, at minimum, three pairs of trousers: dark gray wool for business, cotton chinos or khakis for casual events, and a good pair of jeans. Again, you’ll want these items tailored to fit. When it comes to jeans, don’t buy the distressed look. Go for class that you can mix and match.

Dress Cotton Oxford Shirts

Several of these are a must in classic white or light blue. You’ll wear these in and out of the office, with or without a jacket or blazer. So stock up. You may even want to follow the example of Don Draper and keep a few in your desk drawer … just in case.

Polished shoes

Finally, you’ll want a nice pair of lace-up dress shoes in black or brown. Your shoes should be carefully selected along with your suits in a color and style that flatters, and they should be polished. Don’t forget to purchase a matching belt as well.

How Carefully Chosen Details can Complete the Look

Once you’ve chosen the basics, you can begin to experiment with the details. We have plenty of accessorizing tips for our clients. Here are a few more ideas to consider:

  • A few quality ties to enhance – not cheapen – your suit.
  • Trouser socks in colors that complement your suit.
  • Suit liners that add color and personality.
  • A stylish pair of sunglasses or readers.
  • A nice watch that reflects the professional that you are.

These details won’t go unnoticed. In fact, they can make or break the look. There’s no need to go dramatic. You should, however, choose classic pieces that go well with your coloring and personality. After all, nothing feels better than strapping on a hard-earned luxury watch, taking a final look in the mirror, and walking out of your place looking and feeling like James Bond.
